Detroit: Best Sports City of the Year

by Scott Thompson

det.jpg

That’s right Detroit! Detroit was named Best Sports City of the Year for 2007 by The Sporting News. This annual award that is handed out by TSN usually gets awarded to the big ticket markets like Boston, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. But the success of our sports teams and more importantly the support given by the fans were the deciding factors in announcement. The last time that Detroit won the award was in 1998, riding on the success of the Red Wings. Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti are figured into the scoring.

Record rainfall hits Detroit area

by Scott Thompson

With record rainfall in the area, parts of the Detroit area are flooded and the Red Cross is set up to help. Ronald Grant, a spokesman for the Southeastern Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross, said the shelter at the Salina school would remain open through at least today.

The hardest hit areas are Dearborn and Dearborn Heights. With 1.6 inches of rain, the most since 1904, Mother Nature seems to making up for the lack of rain that had occurred through out the summer.

Hot dog vendors in Detroit

by Scott Thompson

hotdog.jpg

One thing that I have been thinking about lately is where have all the hot dog vendors gone to? You don’t see them anymore like you use too. Is the business that badd for them? Too much crime, I don’t know. All I know is that I miss them.

There used to be one that me and the wife went to at Dingell Park in Ecorse, MI. He was the nicest fellow and always served up the best dog and trimmings.

Has anyone seen any lately? If you have, please let me know with a comment. I would love to check them out.

Detroit is for Lovers!

Sign of the Times

by Scott Thompson

With more and more people losing their jobs to corporate downsizing, weak car sales and so on, this leaves an open opportunity for those who are in a position to take advantage of these slow times.

Currently there are eight properties up for auction due to back taxes. While the amount of the taxed may be more then the house is worth, look at how cheap the land is. Some of the properties are available for under $1000!

You can see the properties and bid on them at the Wayne County Property Auction site. Please confirm all of the information on the property so you are not open to any suprises later down the road.

If you win an auction then you will need 10% of final price as downpayment and then you will have 30 days to close. Also, $245 is added for closing cost.

That is about it, so good luck and happy hunting.

DPS offers more Security

by Scott Thompson

Detroit Public Schools has opted to expand its presence in the community and increase its strength in the schools by opening mini-stations in five high schools this fall. The addition of the mini-stations will help to curb many parents concern of the school consolidations coming up. The combining of rival schools and the pressure of moving to a new school also will be helped by the adding of the mini-stations.

The mini-stations, which will each be staffed by full-time police officers, will be housed in the following high schools: Henry Ford, Cooley, Central, Cody and Northwestern. Henry Ford and Cody are absorbing students from Redford and McKenzie. Students from Northern High School are going to Central and Northwestern; those from Murray-Wright are also going to Northwestern. Cooley will be picking up students from Redford and McKenzie.
